What do imaginary friends say about children’s minds?

        Did you have an imaginary friend? How old were you when you first met your imaginary friend? For how long did you have your imaginary friend? Was your life more cheerful because you had an imaginary friend? How did it affect you?  Was it a good friend or a bad friend?

            About 65% of the children have an imaginary friend at the ages 3-5 years old, when the child start to build his personality and combine the fantasy world with the fantasy world. From almost 65% of the children who have been having imaginary friends 2/3 of the kids outgrow them. A study showed that children between 3-7 years old have different kinds of imaginary friends then the older ones, their usually have as an imaginary friend an object like the stuffed animals. A study shows that children who had imaginary friends tend to become more creative, more curious, more sociable, the ability to see things from other people perspective more evolved and many other things.

            Many of the parents that have children with imaginary friends get worried. They believe the child has problems like: the lack of friends, the child doesn’t adjust well enough in the environment and start to discourage the children from playing with their imaginary friend. The parents don’t need to worry too much, the imaginary friend is nothing more than a product of curios and creative mind of the child.

            Imaginary friends enable children with some useful qualities. They make children try out social relationships at begging faze of life. They develop the ability to control their behavior, to become more discipline and the ability to control their emotions. Having an imaginary friend helps children develop the ability to distinguish between right or wrong, to understand the concept of authority, to understand the mining of punishment or reword.

            The imaginary friend helps you in many ways. As a child you have happy moments or sad moments, kids share their happiness their joy with them, but also helps a children cope with difficult emotions. All this experiences help prepare a child for a better understanding of the real life, even if he doesn’t know it.

The major changes that children have are affecting them such as divorce, a new baby is coming, the death of a relative, the moving of the family in another town.  All this changes can affect a child. Spending more time with the imaginary friend helps him to ease his unhappiness. The imaginary friend helps a child pass the hard moments of his life more easily, forgetting them more easily.

When do the parents need to worry in case their child has an imaginary friend? When a child starts to avoid other children or stops interacting with his real friend, the child may experience some distress. If a child only focuses the imaginary friend for a long period of time and has difficulty in interacting with other people, the child could have anxiety problems, then you need to consult with a professional. In general all children when starting to interact with the world around them find comfort in an imaginary friend. A personal advice, don’t discourage having an imaginary friend, but don’t get too involved, you can let the child know gently but firmly that the imaginary friend is a make-believe.
